Today I went to a pigeon show. This show I've been wating to go to all year. A guy comes there and sells parakeets and rosey bourkes parakeets. He's the guy I got mine off of last year and I've only seen one other person with them in my area. So I wanted to get another pair off of him knowing he would be coming. Well it turns out he didn't have any because he got rid of all his caged birds. Well anyways a vendor was there selling pigeon feed and supplies ect for pigeons. Well they also had a cage that had 2 cockatiels and 2 parakeets in it. The cage hadden't been cleaned for some time and they weren't even being fed parrot feed. They were being fed pigeon feed which had whole corn in it, dried peas, and milo and a few other seeds in there with a bit of finch pellets in it. I first saw the one cockatiel which was a white face which I really wanted. So I asked the lady how much she wanted for him and she said she didn't know because they were one of her sons who wasn't with them today. She said he wanted $75.00 for the 2 tiels, 2 keets, and the cage. To me the Whiteface was worth that because one pet store only sells hand fed ones for $125.00 and another store sells them for $90.00. But I really didn't want the 2 keets and the other tiel, It was a pied and I didn't pay much attention to it at first.
Well I asked the lady if she could call the owner of the birds and see how much he wanted just for the white face (turned out to be $20.00 which was a steal) Well the more I looked at the pied I noticed it was handing it wing wrong and it looked to be broken. It seemed to be dragging it. They were obviously being mistreated. I couldn't stop thinking about the poor pied tiel the whole show. So at the end of the day before I left I told her I wanted to take everything and normally I'll offer them a little less then what they were asking ya know. Well I felt I needed to get the birds out of this situation. So I take the birds out to my car and I decided to change their paper in the bottom of the cage right then and there. So I took out the bottom tray, walked over to the bumpster and I started to dump it. They had an entire sundays news paper in the tray and under all the feed in the bottom it was all wet and growing mold in the bottom. So I put the tray back. Got in the back the the car with them and closed the back so I could check out the pieds wing. Well it wasn't broken. It has this lump on it's wing joint and then I noticed it had a smaller one of the other wing as well. The first thing that came to mind was cancer. After I got home my mom said maybe arthritis. Both tiels are very friendly and the white face is banded but only has 3 letters and 3 numbers, no year. That bird is fine for the most part and so are the pair of keets. All 4 are light, which has to be from being fed the wrong feed. The poor keets can't even crack the corn or the peas so all they were eating were the milo and finch pellets.
I put in some cockatiel mix with all 4 birds and they dove in it. The white face also loves scritches. I was scratching it's head for over a half hour. I bet it felt really good, espically since it was molting. All the birds are full wing but the tiels don't try to fly, the pied can't fly, only the keets try to fly and they aren't any good at it and they aren't tame. I got them on long island from friends of a feather. So if you buy from them you should stop from mistreatment of these birds.
I'm planning on getting the vet to look at the poor pied to see what the lumps really are, if he can remove them, or possiably remove both wings if just the lumps can't be removed, if they are cancer or something serious like that. I don't think removing the wings would matter to the bird since it can't even fly now. But I'm also going to see if the vet things it would be better to do that or just put him to sleep if it's suffering. I really have no idea what it is I'm going to do till I get it into the vets. The other 3 birds seem fine, except for being under weight. I feel so bad and the bird is so sweet, but doesn't like scritches like the WF. I was hoping I would get home in time today before the vets closed today to see if I could get squeezed in but we got stuck in traffic and didn't get back till after he closed. Also since tomorrow is sunday he's closed as well. So I have to wait till monday.
